World-first for Ceres Tags – reusable satellite smart ear tags

CERES Tag – the company that developed the world’s first direct to satellite smart ear tag has now created another first – a reusable satellite smart ear tag.

The new “Ceres Ranch” tag includes all the smart technology from the original Ceres Trace tag in a reusable attachment system that uses industry standard application methodology.

Communicating direct to satellite up to four times a day, livestock producers can get information on not only the GPS location of their animals but also their health and activity, as well as providing immediate mortality and boundary alerts.

Ceres Tag chief executive officer David Smith describes the new product as “the ultimate upgrade in on-farm management”.

“This is something that was born from our customers,” he said.

“We had a lot of customers that really saw the value in our Ceres Trace technology for animal management but wanted to reapply again and again across their herd.”

“Unlike other tags, regardless of where it falls off, you can walk into a paddock and find it to reapply again and again.”

Queensland Trust for Nature was one of the first Ceres Tag customers to try the product.

“We are unique in that we have a working cattle property that has a biodiversity offset, part of having that onsite means we need to have reporting and accurate reporting requires data,” Ben, a senior ranger on the trust’s property Aroona Station explained.

The new product allows users to gain maximum return on their investment without having to compromise on the level of insight they receive, Ceres Tag CEO David Smith says.

Customers are already using these products in Australia and across the world to save time and money when:

  • protecting high value animals,
  • reducing biosecurity risks,
  • improving efficiency when mustering
  • understanding land utilisation,
  • tracking the location of rams.

The Ceres Ranch Tag is the only reusable product in the range, meaning it comes with its own pins, teathers, application and removal tools (purchased separately) that differentiate from the original method.

The tag is easily removed with a standard tag cutter it can move from one animal to the next thereby optimising the three years of satellite time that comes standard in every tag.

Applied with a universal applicator and Ceres Ranch Pins and Tethers, customers need only to activate the tag prior to application to gain insights through their chosen software.

“When it comes to our product range, we are really aiming to service all areas of the market,” Mr Smith said.

“Ceres Trace, for customers that want a full traceability product that will travel with the animal throughout its life; Ceres Wild gives more frequent data that interests researchers, conservationists and those with particularly high value animals which need closer monitoring and Ceres Ranch for the property managers that are looking to improve their operating efficiency and remote monitoring.

“All these product’s groups can be used stand alone or in combination as required.”

Co- Founder Melita Smith said the methodology is built on the standard we have seen in the livestock industry for decades. “Our R&D at Ceres Tag is always based on making things as easy as possible for the end user and in this instance, it meant drawing on what already exists.”

“Ceres Tag | Shop GPS Animal Monitoring Ear Tags range of products provides peace of mind that you will know when it is time to act.”
