Weekly rainfall wrap + rain outlook, 9 September 2020

Guest Author, September 9, 2020

A SERIES of cold fronts brought moderate falls to south-west Western Australia, and western Tasmania, while moist onshore flow produced showers along the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales.

Past seven days: In the first half of the week, a pair of cold fronts tracked across south-west Western Australia, generating moderate falls from about Bunbury to Albany. The cold fronts tracked eastwards, embedded in a strong westerly flow, and produced showers, rain and moderate falls in parts of south-east South Australia, south-west and southern Victoria, and western Tasmania. A surface trough moved over southern New South Wales, with showers developing over central inland parts and between the Illawarra and Mid North Coast districts of New South Wales.

In the second part of the week, a broad high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge along the Queensland coast. The resulting moist onshore flow brought showers to parts of the north-east coast of New South Wales, and to the north tropical and south-east coasts of Queensland.

In the last part of the week, a strong cold front crossed south-west Western Australia, and generated widespread moderate falls in the state’s south-west, and light falls across parts of the South West Land Division.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm were recorded in south-west Western Australia and western Tasmania. The highest weekly totals was 93 mm at Huntly on the south coast of Western Australia.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in south-west Western Australia between Jurien Bay and Hopetoun along the south coast of that state; in south-east South Australia; south-west and small parts of southern Victoria; western and northern Tasmania; north-east New South Wales; and in the north tropical, central and south-east coast of Queensland.
