Weekly rainfall update + rainfall outlook 27 August 2024

SEVERAL weather systems moved through south-west Western Australia and Tasmania during the week, bringing widespread light to moderate rainfall, with localised heavy falls.

A strong cold front swept through south-east Australia on 25 August, bringing severe thunderstorms across Victoria and southern New South Wales, and rainfall totals of 10 to 50 mm across the south-east in the 24 hours to 9 am on 26 August.

A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea directed moist onshore flow to north-eastern Queensland, generating widespread rainfall across the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands district, with daily rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on 21 August.

Weekly rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm were recorded in south-west Western Australia, most of Tasmania, parts of central and northern Victoria, south-eastern New South Wales, and Queensland’s North Tropical Coast and Tablelands district, with totals of 50 to 100 mm in some areas.

Weekly rainfall totals greater than 100 mm were recorded in western Tasmania and isolated areas of northern Victoria.

Mount Read, Tasmania recorded the highest weekly total (at a Bureau gauge) of 202.2 mm.

The highest daily rainfall during the week (at a Bureau gauge) was 70.6 mm, recorded at Mount Hotham (Victoria) in the 24 hours to 9 am on 26 August.
