LIVESTOCK ear tag manufacturers have reiterated that cheaper government-subsidised electronic sheep and goat tags marketed online in Victoria are only available to producers with Victorian Producer Identification Codes (PICS).

The tags which are available from the Victorian Government’s online ordering service to Victorian PIC holders only include the Allflex RapIDTag for 89 cents, the Datamars FET tag for 82 cents and Leader tag for 77 cents.

Agriculture Victoria is subsidising the voluntary use of electronic sheep and goat tags to promote their use for productivity and biosecurity reasons.

In states other than Victoria, these tags can be bought by other producers from rural resellers at standard retail prices.

I use Shearwell tags and find them the best sheep tag on the market. Shearwell Australia has not been included on the list of suppliers. They are 80 cents a tag in Victoria. Editor’s note: The initial Agriculture Victoria media release outlined the new tags available on the online subsidised service and did not include a list of all tags available and their prices. Sheep Central has requested those details from Agriculture Victoria.

Why have you left Shearwell off of the list???

Useful story. What about following it up and asking why that is the case? My hypothesis is that it is because the other states (state governments) don’t allow producers outside of Victoria to buy them. So if you find that is the case, follow it up with the respective state agencies outside of Victoria and ask them why that is the case. I look forward to hearing your findings.
