Roland and Virbac unite to raise prostate cancer awareness

Sheep Central January 28, 2022

“Athlone South” Angus breeder, Roland Cameron and Rod Evans, Virbac Australia Area Sales Manager joined forces to raise awareness of prostate cancer and delivered a combined donation of $11,600 to the Male Bag Foundation.

PENSHURST Angus breeder Roland Cameron will continue to raise awareness of prostate cancer with the donation of two angus heifers sold at the recent Warrnambool South-West Victorian Livestock Exchange Annual Premier Weaner Sale resulting in $6,600 being donated to the Male Bag Foundation.

Furthermore, sale sponsor Virbac Australia, makers of Multimin® and Cydectin®,  also contributed with a donation of $5,000 on the day to support Roland’s efforts.

The Male Bag Foundation raises funds to enable the purchase of transperineal biopsy machines for placement in rural regional hospitals to help diagnose prostate cancer.

Roland chose two of the best heifers from a 350 drop to ensure the proceeds were a substantial donation to the cause. Warrnambool Stock Agents Association also showed their support purchasing one of the heifers and have arranged to send the heifer back to Roland’s property “Athlone South” where she will grow out. The plan is to join her ready to be presented in calf for sale again next year to raise another round of funds for prostate awareness.

“As a result of what happened to me in 2019, I hope men over 50, or those with a family history over 40, start a conversation with their doctor, to make an informed decision about having a Prostate Specific Antigen test (PSA). In my case, I was symptom free, so I was grateful to have an early indicator to have further investigation. I’m dedicated to raising awareness on a subject that many men find difficult to talk about.” Roland said.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia recommends that all men over 50, or 40 with a family history of prostate cancer should talk to their doctor about testing options as part of their regular health check up.* www.pcfa.org.au

Virbac Area Sales Manager, Rod Evans was in support on the day and stated, “Roland has been a long-time supporter of Virbac’s animal health products, so it was our turn to support him. He’s inspirational and on the front foot in joining the growing team around men’s health and awareness of how to avoid prostate cancer. Get on board fellas and book in for a prostate check”.

Roland is also no stranger to the challenges of farming. Yet his dedication to his craft over the years has seen him consistently top sales with his Angus stock and he puts this down to effective animal health management. The recent Hamilton Special Weaner Sale also saw Roland awarded the Angus Best Presented Pen of Steers.

“Presenting your stock on the day at their best is critical. I’ve seen great results from using Cydectin Platinum and Multimin Evolution across all our 2021 drop of steers,” he said.
