SUSTAINABILITY is now more than just a buzzword — it’s a necessity — and agriculture, as one of the most resource-intensive industries, plays a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.

But to drive this change, it’s crucial to have the right people on board. Hiring for sustainable agriculture isn’t just about filling positions; it’s about finding individuals who share a commitment to practices that nurture the earth.

Many large pastoral companies, lotfeeders and meat processors now employ dedicated staff in the sustainability/environmental field, and smaller operators are also seeking staff with skills in this space. Readers will note a role for a Natural Capital and Sustainability Manager included in this week’s latest Jobs Central listings, published above, and accessible here.

The points below will guide employers and potential staff through the key aspects of hiring for sustainability.

The urgency of sustainability in agriculture

The need for sustainable practices in agriculture has never been more pressing. Sustainable agriculture focuses on long-term resource efficiency and environmental stewardship. This shift towards sustainability is not just a trend; it’s essential for the future of farming and grazing.

But to make this transition successful, it’s important to hire individuals who are not only skilled but also passionate about sustainability.

When hiring for sustainable agriculture, the requisite skills should go beyond conventional farming/livestock management expertise. Candidates should be well-versed in sustainable practices such as organic farming, agroecology, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture.

They should also be comfortable with the latest agricultural technologies, which are increasingly geared towards reducing environmental impact. Importantly, they should be problem-solvers—people who can think creatively to find solutions that balance productivity with sustainability.

Experience matters: The value of practical knowledge

While passion and knowledge are critical, practical experience in sustainable agriculture can make all the difference. Look for candidates who have hands-on experience in implementing sustainable practices, whether on farms, in research, or in related roles. This experience provides a grounded understanding of what works and what doesn’t, allowing them to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to your business’s sustainability goals.

The role of continuous learning

Sustainability in agriculture is an evolving field, with new techniques and technologies emerging all the time. That’s why it’s essential to hire individuals who are committed to continuous learning.

While formal education in sustainable agriculture, environmental science, or similar fields provides a strong foundation, the learning shouldn’t stop there. Encourage team-members to engage in ongoing professional development, whether through workshops, online courses, or industry events, to stay on top of the latest advancements in sustainable farming.

Aligning values: Finding the right cultural fit

When hiring for sustainable agriculture, it’s important to find candidates whose personal values align with your business’s mission. Sustainability is not just a set of practices; it’s a mindset.

During the hiring process, take the time to understand how candidates view sustainability and how they incorporate it into their daily lives. This alignment of values will ensure that your team is fully committed to your sustainability initiatives, driving them forward with passion and purpose.

Embracing technology

Technology is a powerful tool in the pursuit of sustainability. From precision farming tools that optimise resource use to data analytics that inform better decision-making, technology can greatly enhance your sustainability efforts.

When hiring, seek out candidates who are not only familiar with these technologies but are also eager to apply them in a sustainable context. Their ability to integrate technological solutions with sustainable practices will be key to your farm’s success.

Building a diverse team

Sustainability challenges are complex and require a range of perspectives to solve. By building a diverse team, you can bring together a variety of skills and experiences that will help you tackle these challenges more effectively.

Consider candidates from different backgrounds, including agronomists, environmental scientists, technologists, and business strategists. A diverse team is more likely to come up with innovative solutions that can drive your sustainability initiatives forward.

Leadership in sustainable agriculture

Strong leadership is essential for any sustainability initiative. Leaders in sustainable ag need to be visionaries, capable of inspiring their teams to embrace new practices and technologies.

When hiring for leadership roles, look for individuals who have a proven track record in leading sustainability projects. These leaders will play a crucial role in guiding your team towards achieving your long-term sustainability goals, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across your organisation.

Growing a sustainable workforce

Hiring for sustainable agriculture is about more than just filling positions—it’s about cultivating a team that is committed to nurturing the earth. By focusing on candidates with the right blend of skills, experience, and values, you can build a workforce that will lead your sustainability efforts with dedication and enthusiasm.
