Producers can view Thursday’s MLA AGM and Industry Forum online

SHEEP meat, cattle and goat meat producers across Australia will be able to view Thursday’s Meat & Livestock Australia annual general meeting and Industry forum online.

The proceedings in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills on Thursday, November 10 will be live-streamed, accessible via the MLA website – click here to access – allowing producers who are unable to attend to hear from MLA and industry representatives about the latest marketing and R&D priorities and what the future holds.

mla-logo-paddedThe theme for this year’s program is Towards 2020 and beyond – Fostering prosperity in the red meat industry and will have a specific focus on the future, as well as the current state of the red meat and livestock industry and the role MLA is playing in building producer profitability, sustainability and global competitiveness.

As well as the formal AGM proceedings, the day’s program features a number of forums which will provide an opportunity to hear from senior industry and MLA leaders and will feature an open Q&A component.

The Red Meat Advisory Council will host a session featuring an industry update from RMAC chair Don Mackay, followed by a moderated panel session for an engaging discussion on industry issues. The second session will include key updates from MLA senior leaders followed by an open Q&A.

The forums will be followed by MLA’s AGM which will include reporting on the company’s performance and governance for the last year. MLA managing director Richard Norton will present MLA’s vision for the industry to 2020 and beyond.

MLA members are encouraged to ask questions and make comments about MLA’s operations, its audited financial report and the performance of the Board and senior management.

Members are invited to submit questions on notice to MLA at any time up to 3.30pm on 8 November. The chair and managing director will provide answers to these at the meeting. To submit questions on notice please email [email protected]

Voting by proxy

MLA members who cannot attend the AGM can vote by proxy or attorney. To do so, completed proxy forms need to be sent via post or online at www.computershare.com.au/mlavoting by 3pm (SA time) on 8 November.

Session One: Red Meat Advisory Council (RMAC): Working for South Australia

Date: Thursday, 10 November

Time: 10–11.30am

RMAC: Working for South Australia will include an address from RMAC Independent Chair Don Mackay, on key market issues and opportunities for the industry in 2016, with a focus on South Australian beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat producers.

It will be followed by a Q&A panel of industry leaders, featuring:

  • James Campbell, Chair – Australian Processor Council, Director – Australian Meat Processor Council & Chief Executive Officer, Sanger Australia
  • Simon Crean, Chair – Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council & former Federal Leader of the Opposition and Minister for Primary Industries
  • Rick Gates, Chair, Goat Industry Council of Australia & NSW rangeland goat producer and depot owner
  • Lachie Hart, Chair – Australian Meat Industry Council & Managing Director, Stockyard Beef
  • Tess Herbert, President, Australian Lot Feeders’ Association & Director, Gundamain Feedlots & Ladysmith Feedlot
  • Jeff Murray, President, Sheepmeat Council of Australia & Western Australian red meat producer
  • Howard Smith, President, Cattle Council of Australia & Central Queensland beef and grains producer

Session Two: MLA Producer Forum

Date: Thursday, 10 November

Time: 1–3pm

The MLA Producer Forum will include key updates from MLA senior leaders:

  • Sean Starling, MLA General Manager, Research, Development and Innovation – Improving uptake and efficiency of RD&A through the value chain
  • Dr Christine Pitt, CEO, MLA Donor Company (MDC) – Accelerating innovation in the red meat industry
  • Dr Jane Weatherley, CEO, Integrity and Information Systems Company – The power of information – the evolution of industry integrity systems
  • Michael Finucan, MLA General Manager, International Markets – Global consumers, customers and competitors – securing Australia’s place on the plate.

The Forum will continue with the presenters to be joined by Lisa Sharp, MLA Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and Michael Crowley, MLA General Manager, Producer Consultation and Adoption, for an open Q&A session.

Meat & Livestock Australia Annual General Meeting 2016

Date: Thursday, 10 November

Time: 3.30–5pm

This is the formal Annual General Meeting, including reports from MLA Chair Dr Michele Allan on MLA’s performance and governance for the last year and MLA Managing Director Richard Norton on the vision for the industry 2020 and beyond.

The business of the AGM will include:

  • Receiving MLA’s financial statements, directors’ report and audit report for the year ended 30 June, 2016
  • Considering the election of three directors to the Board.
