Primary producers urged to inspect heavy vehicles for safety

Sheep Central June 4, 2026

THE National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is reminding primary producers to prioritise the maintenance of their heavy vehicles to prevent critical mechanical failure.

Primary production is one of the top commodities transported by road in Australia and is the focus of the latest episode of the NHVR’s What’s Your 20? Podcast.

In the episode titled Stories from the field at Farm World Hosts Rob and Sarah speak to primary producers, transport operators, and agricultural machinery experts on the challenges with transporting raw materials and livestock, managing fatigue and business cost pressures.

NHVR Director of Policy Implementation Peter Austin said rising operating costs and seasonal demands should never come at the cost of safety.

“Operating any unsafe or unroadworthy heavy vehicle, including those used exclusively for agricultural or on-farm work, puts all road users at risk.

“Heavy vehicles used intermittently or for seasonal work should be inspected prior to use before the season starts, to ensure their mechanical condition means they can be operated safely.”

The reminder comes after a major defect notice was recently issued in the Western Downs Region, Queensland after a prime mover registered under a primary producer concession had faulty brake system components and overall poor vehicle maintenance.

The NHVR has published Regulatory Advice on managing the risks associated with poorly maintained or unroadworthy heavy vehicles used for agricultural or seasonal work, such as harvest or snow activity.

Primary producers can use the 2026 Master Code for assistance on how to manage hazards and risks specific to transporting livestock or raw materials and plan safe heavy vehicle access routes while loading and unloading.
