Lamb Processing

Nothing behind sale rumours, says Manildra Meat Co

Jon Condon November 21, 2016

SPECULATION in the metropolitan media late last week that Manildra Group is planning to sell its NSW red meat processing operations are without foundation, the company told Sheep Central this morning.

Dorper carcasesWeekend press suggested Manildra Group is looking to sell its lamb and beef processing operations at Cootamundra, but the company has rejected the claim outright.

“Today, rumours were reported in the press regarding a potential sale of Manildra Meat Co. While our policy is not to comment on rumours, given the source of this speculation has received considerable public attention, Manildra Meat Co believes a statement to our employees, customers and partners is warranted. Manildra Meat Co is proudly a 100 percent family-owned Australian meat-processing plant, and we are not engaged in a process to sell the company,” a statement said.

Manildra Meat Co is a wholly owned subsidiary of diversified agribusiness Manildra Group.

The company owns and operates the Cootamundra beef/sheep processing plant, with sales offices throughout Asia and US for a range of branded beef and lamb products.

The Manildra Group operate a diversified agribusiness portfolio including four flour mills across NSW processing about one million tonnes of wheat each year, starch and ethanol production, canola oil processing, in addition to its red meat processing operations.

As outlined in this earlier article, the company bought the former GM Scott Cootamundra abattoir in 2014, ending some 30 years of ownership by the Noble family. At time of purchase, the plant had capacity to process around 3500 lamb and 100 cattle per day, but Manildra planned to double the plant’s beef capacity.

Manildra is also involved in a joint venture in Argyle Prestige Meats, in a boning room and retail-ready packaging facility at the old Harden abattoir site.
