MLA webinar to explain new Sheep Genetics search site

Sheep Central, August 21, 2020

MEAT & Livestock Australia will hold a webinar to explain the new-look Sheep Genetics search site and take user feedback next week.

The webinar has been scheduled for 12.30-1.15 pm on Monday 24 August in response to complaints from some sheep breeders and commercial growers about its index-focused design and functionality. Click here to register for the webinar.

MLA has said the new search site gives producers access to a range of new features that can help them reach their breeding objectives faster. Some changes to the new-look website include faster loading times, more targeted search functionality, easier navigation and accessibility on any device.

However, several breeders and growers have told Sheep Central they were concerned the search site functions limited their accessibility to sheep data and “pigeon-holed” sheep according to Sheep Genetics indexes.

In the webinar, Sheep Genetics senior development officer Peta Bradley will walk participants through the changes to the website and how to make the most of the new features.

The presentation will explain how to search using the new filter feature, export animals and customise Australian Sheep Breeding Values.

Some breeders have told Sheep Central the time allowed for the webinar might be inadequate to hear feedback from users, but MLA media manager Josh McIntosh said there was a link for breeders and growers to submit questions before the webinar started.

“And there will be an opportunity during the Zoom call to submit questions.”

He said if all questions were not answered during the webinar there would opportunities to contact people directly and to hold further webinars.

“First and foremost it will be a webinar running through how it works and people can submit questions.”

The webinar recording would also be released, he said.

Sheep Genetics manager Gus Rose and MLA genetics program manager Hamish Chandler will also join the webinar.

Sheep Genetics retired our old Landcruiser and have now given us a flash-looking Lamborghini which looks nice in the car park, but is totally hopeless where it is needed.

Mmm…the registration site took some finding. Don’t make the mistake of going to the Sheep Genetics website thinking that would be a logical place to find a link to this webinar registration. That would be too sensible!

Very disappointing the way it has been dumbed down, I don’t think MLA gives we producers any credit for being able to work our way around the figures. I was able to sort for a desired index and then take in a whole animal’s data and make my decisions quickly and easily. Now there is a lot of clicking and waiting and it is not easy to compare animals.
