Merino field day to have eating quality flavour

BALMORAL Breeders 2025 field day will have a distinctive lamb eating quality flavour at Melville Forest this Friday.

The field day at ‘Warrooka’ at 668 Dundas Gap Road will feature industry speakers that will cover eating quality in Merino sheep, the latest Merino Lifetime Productivity Project fertility results and new flystrike Australian Sheep Breeding Value developments.

University of New England associate Professor of meat science, Dr Peter McGilchrist, will lead the eating quality discussions with a presentation on Merino EQ and the latest research.

Thomas Foods International’s farm assurance and supply chain manager Mark Inglis will outline what’s happening at TFI with eating quality measurements.

Balmoral Sire Evaluation Committee member Ricky Luhrs said future wether lambs from the trial will be slaughtered and measured for the eating quality traits of lean meat yield and intramuscular fat by TFI.

Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association executive officer Ben Swain will outline the latest MLP fertility results, the new flystrike ASBV developments and give an update on the MLP project ‘Predicting Lifetime Production.’

The 2023 and 2024 trial progeny from 50 different sires will be yarded for inspection and there will also be trade displays.

The field day runs from noon to 5pm and a barbecue lunch will be provided.
