MLA sheep research extension manager, Renelle Jeffrey, said the ParaBoss monthly outlooks provided an easy way for producers to stay informed about the potential for parasite infestations in their area.

“They allow lamb and wool producers to not only be aware of what the regional situation is, but also provide tools and resources for action to be taken,” she said.

“If a producer is concerned about worms, for example, one of the first steps is do a worm egg count, which is explained on the site.”

Worm Egg Counts (WEC) are a useful worm management tool for producers. They are generally the best method to check the overall worm status of a mob, decide if treatment is necessary and help determine if previous treatments were effective.

The use of WEC has declined to 21pc since 2003 (when it was 44pc) even though they give a good indication of production losses before other signs become obvious.
