Lamb carcase feedback takes a leap at Gundagai + webinar

Terry Sim September 4, 2024

GUNDAGAI Meat Processors is an industry leader in individual carcase feedback to its lamb suppliers and a new producer portal is pushing it further ahead.

At Gundagai Lamb’s producer awards night last week, GMP and Gundagai Lamb chief executive officer Will Barton announced the launch of a new producer portal allowing producers and agents to more dynamically review their carcase data.

Following a successful pilot of the portal, producers were invited to log in and start using it from this week.

“Now we are light years in front, because now we’ve gone from a fairly basic way for people to access their data on the afternoon of processing to the same thing but with the ability to run a range of different visualisations of their data,” Mr Barton said.

In recognition of Gundagai Lamb’s continued commitment to innovation including improvements in traceability, data collection and use of advanced feedback platforms, Mr Barton also announced Meat and Livestock Australia’s support of a five-year long-term practice change program, that includes ongoing support for producer and agent engagement.

Mr Barton told Sheep Central Gundagai Lamb had been providing carcase feedback to producers through a rudimentary web-based portal for years.

“They can now select the data they want to analyse – such as hot standard carcase weight versus lean meat yield or HSCW versus intramuscular fat.

“They can overlay animal health, they can do whole lot of stuff dynamically to see what their data looks like.”

Mr Barton said the new portal would have the flexibility in coming years for producers to analyse the relationship between carcase traits and trends. Eventually the portal could be used to identify the performance of lamb sires in specific carcase trait areas.

“Eventually … at the moment it is benchmarked against everybody else anonymously.

“If they’ve got EID on farm, they can certainly compare how that data relates to growth rates on farm or other interesting indicators.”
