Early online wool sales indicate continued demand

Sheep Central, January 29, 2019

SUSTAINED auction market demand for sound quality wool flowed through to online AuctionsPlus sales last week and continued today.

As demand for quality wool attracted buyer interest to push the benchmark AWEX Eastern Market Indicator up four cents to 1927c/kg clean, AuctionsPlus Wool sold 119 bales.

AuctionsPlus operations manager Tom Rookyard said already this week AuctionsPlus has had online buying interest, with 44 bales selling up to Tuesday morning.

“It is expected that the market will continue on its current path, and holding firm.

“Mills are aware that there is not a huge quantity in front of them, so they are happy to buy what is on offer,” he said.

“In the north at the Sydney auctions this week, the offering is not unexpectedly dominated by tender, drought-affected wool, thus it is expected good quality wools will be highly sought after.”

Mr Rookyard said there was buyer interest online in the finer end, with 10 bales of wool at 15 microns or lower, with low vm, selling. The top-priced line on Auctionsplus Wool last week was a bale of 15 micron EX SUPAAA fine Merino fleece wool that made 2200c/kg greasy, or 2981c/kg clean. The line yielded 73.8pc, had an average staple length of 82mm, a tensile strength of 44 Newtons/kilotex and a very low 0.3pc vegetable matter content.

A seven-bale line of 19.2 micron AAAM sold 1582c/kg greasy, or 2197c/kg clean. The line yielded 72pc, with an average staple length of 68mm, a tensile strength of 43N/kt and 0.5pc vm.

A 12-bale line of 20.8 micron AAAM with a yield of 63.5pc, staple length of 92mm, tensile strength of 38N/kt and 2.8pc vm sold for 1405c/kg greasy, or 2213c/kg clean.

Crossbred wool this week was topped by an 11-bale line of 24.9 micron fleece that sold for 1100c/kg greasy, or 1560cf/kg clean. The line yielded 70.5pc and had 0.4pc vm. This line was branded Warraninni and was sold by Primaries of WA.

A two-bale line of 26.6 micron AAAFX with a yield of 68.8pc and 1.3pc vm sold for 845c/kg greasy, or 1228c/kg clean.

A four-bale line of 27.7 micron AAMX sold for 665c/kg greasy, or 961c/kg clean. It yielded 71.3pc with 0.1pc vm.
