INVERELL stock agent Ben McMahon has won the 2020 ALPA New South Wales Young Auctioneers Competition.
The Lehman Stock & Property auctioneer won the prestigious competition from Forbes stock agent Sam Smith from Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon & Co.
The Max Bailey Encouragement Award went to Harry Waters from Elders Rural Services at Gundagai.
The other 2020 ALPA NSW Young Auctioneers Competition finalists included Ned Balharrie, Nutrien Livestock, Wagga Wagga; William Claridge, C.L. Squires & Co, Inverell; Thomas McGregor, Elders Rural Services, Goulburn; Jake McKenzie, Duncombe & Co, Crookwell; Nick Rogers, Davidson Cameron & Co, Guyra; Jake Smith, Elders Rural Services, Gundagai, and; Shannon Wicks, Nutrien Livestock, Wagga Wagga.
The young stock and station agents showcased their auctioneering talent in the competition at the Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets, Dubbo on Thursday, 3 September.
This is the 32nd year of the state competition and the first time the location has moved from the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association said each auctioneer showed great flair and determination in selling three prime lots to a strong professional buyers ring, in front of a worldwide audience and special attendees. They were judged by three well-known industry experts with widespread industry experience. The judges evaluated their presentation, delivery, diction, voice, manner, knowledge of values, as well as their unique command and style.
Mr McMahon won the John Weekes Memorial Shield, $500 cash, various prizes, and a place in the 2021 ALPA National Young Auctioneers Competition.
ALPA chief executive officer Peter Baldwin said the association was very proud of each of the auctioneers who represented themselves, their companies and their families with pride and distinction.
“All great Auctioneers are moulded, not made and we take great inspiration from young people in our industry showing passion for the art of auctioneering.
“These young auctioneers who uplifted us today are our future and are living proof that our educational programmes and great mentorship in conjunction with their employers is showing such great dividends,” he said.
