WESTERN New South Wales landholders are being urged to consider feral pig-strength meat baits in a bid to mitigate the impacts of the destructive pest animal.

Feral pig strength meat baits are only available in the Western Local Land Services region, with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) issuing a permit for its use under strict conditions.

Western Local Land Services regional pest animal coordinator, Danielle Barrett is encouraging landholders to consider all the tools at their disposal to reduce the impacts of feral pigs to primary production, biosecurity and the local environment.

“Feral pigs are causing significant damage to our landholders’ livestock, pastures, infrastructure and crops, as well as spreading diseases and impacting native animals and plants,” Danielle said.

“Feral pig strength meat baits are a proven and effective control tool for landholders.

“Feral pig strength meat baits should be considered as one of several options for controlling feral pigs, along with grain baiting and poisoning, shooting and trapping.”

The issuing of the permit by the APVMA came following a research trial that found there was little to no adverse outcomes when using feral pig strength meat baits.
