CareFlight workshop participants learning to stabilise a car accident victim.
VICTORIAN farmers interested in getting some free training in handling emergency injury and trauma situations on-farm will get two opportunities next week.
CareFlight head of operations – education and training Margarita Obeid said CareFlight medics will be in Plenty and Ballan on 3rd and 4th of October to deliver fully-funded Trauma Care Workshops designed specifically for people living and working in rural communities.
She said the practical, hands-on workshops will equip participants with the skills and confidence to respond to serious injuries that can occur on farms, stations and worksites, including injuries caused by heavy machinery and livestock, crush trauma, severe bleeding, penetrating wounds and falls.
“Such injuries can quickly become life‑threatening when medical help may be some time away.
The CareFlight training is tailored to rural communities — if you have a car accident, machinery injuries or snake bites, those kind of things,” she said.
Ms Obeid said the workshops are funded by the Gailey Lazarus Foundation.
“For 15 years CareFlight have been delivering this life-saving training to communities across Australia.
“To date, more than 10,000 participants have attended the training, with overwhelmingly positive feedback,” she said.
The workshops are delivered by experienced CareFlight nurses and paramedics, giving participants the opportunity to learn directly from frontline health professionals with extensive pre-hospital and emergency care expertise.

The fully sponsored, eight-hour training program requires no previous experience and is designed for community members who may happen to on site of an emergency. Through interactive learning and practical exercises, participants develop the knowledge, skills, confidence, and resilience needed to respond effectively in emergency situations, Ms Obeid said.

- Patient assessment
- Airway obstruction management
- Severe bleeding control
- Managing injuries caused by farm animals or equipment
- Severe burns management
- Spinal injury management
- Mass casualty incidents
Training is delivered by active paramedics and nurses so plenty of opportunities to ask questions and hear their stories from the field. Light refreshments are provided throughout the workshop.
