Sheep Sustainability Framework opens recruitment for new chair and steering group

Sponsored Content February 4, 2026

AUSTRALIA’S sheep and wool industry is seeking skilled and motivated leaders to help guide its sustainability future, with the Sheep Sustainability Framework (SSF) now inviting applications for a new Steering Group Chair and several Group Members.

Established in 2021 by Sheep Producers Australia (SPA) and WoolProducers Australia (WPA), the SSF plays a central role in monitoring, measuring and reporting on sustainability performance across the Australian sheep and wool sector.

The Framework provides the evidence that markets, customers, investors and communities increasingly expect, and it helps industry identify opportunities for improvement from paddock to processor.

Supported by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), the Sustainability Steering Group (SSG) brings together experienced people from across the supply chain to strengthen the Framework and ensure it remains aligned with industry needs and expectations.

Opportunities now open

 Steering group chair

The SSF is seeking a respected and forward thinking leader to take on the role of Steering Group Chair. Working closely with the SSF Board and supported by the SSF Manager, the Chair will guide the Steering Group in developing and overseeing the Framework, contribute recommendations to the Board, represent the SSF at key industry events, and help promote sustainability reporting across the value chain.

The role requires a commitment of approximately 60 hours per year. Sitting fees and expenses are provided in line with MLA policy.

Steering group members

The SSF is also seeking several new Steering Group Members to broaden the skills and experience represented within the group.

Expressions of interest are encouraged from people with experience in areas such as sheep production, wool brokering, livestock agency work, farm advisory services, sustainability consulting, or banking and finance that supports the sheep industry. Members are expected to help design and evaluate sustainability indicators, represent and promote the Framework in their area of the supply chain, and contribute to reporting on the industry’s material sustainability topics.

The commitment is approximately 60 hours per year, with remuneration provided under MLA’s sitting fee policy.

Why get involved?

These roles offer the opportunity to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian sheep and wool industry.

Steering group members and the chair work collaboratively with others across the supply chain and help maintain industry access to markets, investment and community trust by strengthening transparency and reporting.

Involvement provides a valuable platform for industry engagement and leadership while supporting continuous improvement in environmental care, animal welfare, community wellbeing and economic resilience.
