Rainfall was recorded in all States and Territories over the past week, with totals as high as as 200 mm to 400 mm measured in eastern New South Wales and the southeastern Queensland coast, and in northern and eastern Tasmania.

An upper-level trough over inland Queensland generated a broad cloudband with embedded thunderstorms and showers. Moderate falls were recorded across central and western Queensland, and parts of central New South Wales. Another upper-level trough over central Australia produced areas of rain and storm over southern parts of the Northern Territory and northern parts of South Australia.

During the middle of the week, a rain band that had developed off the northwest coast of Western Australia extended through central and southeastern parts of Western Australia, ahead of a cold front tracking across the southwest. Light to moderate falls were recorded over large parts of Western Australia.

In the east, a significant upper-level trough and an associated surface trough developed over inland eastern Australia. Moderate falls were recorded across much of southern and southeastern Queensland, while heavy falls were reported from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast.

The trough and low pressure system deepened, forming an East Coast Low off the northern New South Wales coast. Widespread, heavy rainfall was recorded about the northern coast and ranges, before the main rainfall focus shifted southwards to impact the southeastern coast and ranges. Heavy falls were recorded around the Illawarra and Upper North Coast districts in New South Wales.

At the end of the week, the southward moving complex low pressure system interacted with a broad complex of low pressure located in the Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea, directing a very moist northeasterly flow over Tasmania. The system produced a strong northeasterly flow over the State, and brought heavy rainfall to northern and northeastern Tasmania. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded over much of the eastern half of Tasmania for the remainder of the week.

Numerous locations had record high daily rainfall totals during the week.

Rainfall totals between 200 mm and 400 mm were recorded in eastern New South Wales and the southeastern Queensland coast, and in northern and eastern Tasmania, with Illawarra, Upper North Coast and South Coast districts of New South Wales reported totals in excess of 400 mm, including the highest weekly total of 645 mm at Robertson (The Pie Shop) in the Illawarra district.

Rainfall totals between 50 and 200 mm were recorded in parts of central, southern and eastern Queensland, central and eastern New South Wales, East Gippsland and elevated areas of the Victorian Alps. Similar totals were also recorded in northern and eastern Tasmania, and in small areas along the west coast of Western Australia, and the southern interior of the Northern Territory.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded across large areas of central and southwest Western Australia, the southern half of the Northern Territory, in the north and about the southern coasts of South Australia. Similar totals were also recorded in the eastern half of Victoria, central and eastern New South Wales, and most of Queensland except the far north and the southwest.

Much of northern Australia, the interior of Western Australia, eastern and western South Australia, western New South Wales and the western half of Victoria recorded little or no rainfall this week.
