A RAIN band produced moderate to locally heavy falls in the north west of Western Australia, while a coastal trough and south easterly onshore winds generated moderate falls along the east coast of New South Wales and south eastern Queensland.

Past seven days: At the start of the week, an extensive rain band developed and moved over the northern Gascoyne, Pilbara and Interior districts of Western Australia, which was associated with a strong cold front and a pre-frontal surface trough in the northwest. Moderate to locally heavy falls were recorded in the area before the systems gradually tracked eastwards, with further heavy falls in the Pilbara. A westerly airflow persisted about the southern half of Western Australia behind the front, with enhanced shower activity near the west coast and moderate falls about the South West Land Division. Light falls were recorded along the south coasts of Western Australia and southwest South Australia.

In the east, southeasterly onshore winds associated with a high over the Tasman Sea coupled with a surface trough off the New South Wales coast produced low level cloud with showers and isolated thunderstorms, and moderate falls along coastal areas from southeastern Queensland to southeastern New South Wales.

Around the middle of the week, the trough and associated rain band continued to bring moderate falls to the northeast Gascoyne, Pilbara and Interior of Western Australia, with showers and thunderstorms extending troughout the South West Land Division and southern coast of the State. A cold front drew the trough over South Australia and then southeastern Australia, generating moderate falls in southern South Australia, northwestern Victoria and elevated areas of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. A northwesterly airstream brought strong, gusty winds and moderate falls to western and northwestern Tasmania. The cloudband and trough continued to cross central and eastern New South Wales with patchy rain and showers producing mostly light falls in the eastern half of the State.

At the end of the week, another cold front approached and tracked across the southwest of Western Australia, with moderate falls reported in South West Western Australia. The cold front and a complex area of low pressure then tracked across southeastern Australia, bringing moderate falls to southeastern South Australia, western, central and northeastern Victoria, and northwestern Tasmania. In the east, a southeasterly airstream brought onshore showers with moderate falls about the central coast of New South Wales.

Rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm were recorded in pockets of the Pilbara in Western Australia, and areas of the central to northeast coast of New South Wales. The highest weekly total was 160 mm at Yarras (Mount Seaview) in the Manning District in New South Wales.

Rainfall totals between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded across much of the Pilbara and southwest coast in Western Australia, along the coastal strip north of Wollongong in New South Wales, and elevated areas of northeastern Victoria.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in remaining parts of the Pilbara, Gascoyne and Interior districts, and the southwest quarter of Western Australia; much of southern South Australia; most of Victoria apart from Gippsland; northern and western Tasmania; southern and eastern New South Wales, and southeastern Queensland.

Little or no rainfall was recorded the eastern parts of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, the northern half of South Australia, Queensland away from the southeast coast, northern New South Wales away from the coast, Gippsland in Victoria, and southeast.
