WEEKLY rainfall totals greater than 50 mm were recorded over much of eastern Australia, and the far south-west corner of Western Australia, with totals exceeding 300 mm recorded in the north tropical coast and south-east coast of Queensland.
Monthly and annual daily records were exceeded for many sites in Queensland and inland New South Wales with weekly totals being over two to eight times greater than the average monthly total for large parts of Queensland.
The heavy rainfall over eastern Australia was the result of persistent onshore flow feeding into an extensive low pressure trough.
A cold front produced light to moderate rainfall, mostly around 25 to 50 mm, over Tasmania and western parts of Western Australia.
The highest weekly total at a Bureau gauge was 456.5 mm at Peachester in the Southeast Coast District in Queensland.
The highest daily total for the week was 234.6 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on 11 May, at Cowley Beach (Defence) in the North Tropical Coast in Queensland.
