VICTORIAN shearers Luke Hillis and Cameron Hicks have raised more than $8000 for the Movember charity in a marathon ewe shearing in the state’s west.
At their ‘Luke and Cam’s Fundraiser Ewe Tally Day’ in the Hawkesdale shed ‘Bermuda’ owned by Blair O’Toole earlier this month, the shearers managed a combined tally of 1315 composite ewes in nine hours on their handpieces.

Luke Hillis is on the long blow supported by Josh Lilley, left, and wool handler Mel Lilley.
Luke said the tally day was inspired by and in honour of a mate he lost.
“It’s for Movember, a charity close to my heart, spending my birthday at a mate’s funeral it really hits home.”
He said the tally day might also be a stepping stone to a record attempt in the future.
Luke said the shearers’ first goal was 600 ewes shorn for the day, and he had 700 “in the back if my mind”, but finished with managed 678 and Cameron put 637 down the chute.
“It was a tough day in the heat, the sheep were strong but you wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Cameron Hicks is urged on by Shawn Barnett, left, with Mali Lazdinis ready to collect the fleece.
Cameron, 34, said despite cramping in the last run, determination and supporters got him over the line.
“This the most I’ve ever shorn – 635 is the best I’ve shorn in lambs and today 637 in ewes.
“They were big and strong and weren’t shearing as well as we thought, they just didn’t sweat up,” he said.
“I’m on my way out of shearing, but Luke’s got a big future in front of him.”
The tally day followed Luke’s shearing of 830 crossbred lambs in nine hours in 2023 to raise money for the men’s health awareness campaign Movember.
Luke’s chosen foundations for the event were Movember Male Mental and Physical Health. Cameron’s chosen foundation was FND Australia Support Services.
