Rainfall lifts AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb offering for keen buyers

RAINFALL brought a flood of sheep and lambs onto Australia’s online livestock sale platform AuctionsPlus last week.

AuctionsPlus said last week’s rainfall and strong market prices contributed to the online offering rising by 18,148 to 62,795 head.

New South Wales provided 56 percent of the listings and its regional producers and processors bought back 38pc of the national offering, including into the Riverina (10,613), central west (7168), west (3790) and south-west slopes and plains (2846). Western Queensland bought back in 7075 head and the remainder went to north-west and northern Victoria (5825).

Scanned in-lamb Merino ewes sold to $243, Merino wethers made to $142 and scanned in-lamb first cross ewes sold for $252. The national clearance dropped slightly to 78pc.

Scanned Merino ewes sell to $243

AuctionsPlus said 78pc of the scanned in-lamb Merino ewes offered sold from $106 to $243, averaging $189. The Old Cobran Pastoral Pty Ltd at Albury, New South Wales offered seven lines , with 373 4-5 year-old joined ewes in two lines achieving the top price to a local buyer. The freshly shorn Old Cobran Pastoral blood ewes weighed 56kgs and were joined to Poll Dorset rams. At Mantung in South Australia, 220 scanned in-lamb 23-25 month-old Poll Merino ewes sold for $191 to a Victorian buyer at Swan Hill. The Borung blood ewes weighed 52kgs and were joined to Poll Merino rams.

Unjoined Merino ewes make to $165

Unjoined Merino sold online from $75 to $165, averaging $128. At Kyalite in NSW, 270 10-11 month-old Merino ewe lambs from the Warrawee Pastoral Co sold for the top price. The Tamaleuca blood lambs weight 39kg and had a 4.5cm fleece.

Merino wethers in strong demand

An increased supply of 10,509 Merino wethers sold well to achieve a 96pc clearance. Prices ranged from $84.50 to $142 and averaged $115. A line of 318 store wether lambs from P.A. Cornwell & Co at Clare, SA, achieved the top price. The August/September 2018 drop lambs weighted 40kg and will remain in SA.

Grown Merino wethers averaged $133 and sold from $101.50 up to $150 for 600 26-27 month-old wethers offered by Walgett growers D.M. & M.E. Hartog. The Wilgunya blood wethers weighed 43kgs and carried a 6.25cm fleece.

Scanned first cross ewes sell to $252

Scanned in-lamb first cross ewes averaged $223 and sold from $181 up to $252 for 210 2-3 year-old ewes from M. & N. Leighton at Condobolin, NSW. The Dunnield blood ewes weighed 62kgs and were scanned in-lamb to Poll Dorset rams. A line of 120 2.5-3.5 year-old ewes at Maroona ion Victoria sold for $232. The ewes weighed 72kgs and were joined to Poll Dorset rams. They were bought by a NSW buyer at Wagga Wagga.

First cross ewe lambs sold from $144 to $200 and averaged $177. The top price was paid for 62 July-August 2018 drop ewe lambs from J.C. Hamblin at Matong in NSW. The 58kg ewes had a 2.5cm fleece and were sold to a NSW buyer. At Glenhope in Victoria, 115 May-June 2018 drop ewe lambs weighing 43kgs and with a 5cm fleece sold for $165 to a local buyer.

Ewes with lambs sold from $130 up to $174 for 120 Dorper 2-8 year-old ewes with 102 lambs at Boggabilla in NSW. The ewes weighed 59kgs and their 2-10 week-old lambs were sired by Dorper rams.

Crossbred lambs sold online last week from 337-461c/kg live, averaging 399c/kg. The top price was achieved by a line of 225 White Suffolk cross store lambs at Nyngan, NSW. The The July/August 2018 drop lambs weighed 27kg. At Boggabilla in NSW, 162 January/February 2019 drop mixed sex Dorper sold for 364c/kg lwt.
