Monaro sheep and beef producers to learn new skills for profitability

Sheep Central, March 5, 2019

SHEEP meat and beef producers in New South Wales’ Monaro region will get tips on improving farm productivity at a free Meat & Livestock Australia workshop at Nimmitabel next week.

The ‘Improving Your Farm Productivity’ workshop on Tuesday 12 March will provide producers with insights from three different courses offered under MLA’s Profitable Grazing Systems (PGS) program.

Courses and presenters include Pasture Principles (Basil Doonan, Macquarie Franklin); Lifting Lamb Survival (Nathan Scott, Achieve AG Solutions); and Making Better On-Farm Investments (Hilary Beech, Holmes Sackett).

Macquarie Franklin principal consultant Basil Doonan said the aim of the Monaro workshop was to equip producers with information and knowledge from the available courses and demonstrate the benefits of undertaking further skill development.

“The workshop will give producers a taste of the courses available and help determine which program may be the best fit to make a measurable improvement to their profitability,” Mr Doonan said.

“For example, Pastures Principles is about marrying animal requirements with pasture growth.

“We show beef and sheep meat producers very clearly how to maximise growth of the highest quality feed and to ensure survival of improved perennials,” he said.

“The aim of Pasture Principles is to provide producers with a set of guiding principles that will allow them to manage confidently regardless of the season, situation or system. The coaching program includes six sessions run over a 12-month period in the field.

“Producers learn to feed budget and are able to make profitable feeding or destocking decisions.”

PGS is a group-based delivery program which drives improved business performance for participating red meat producers through skill development.
This skill development helps producers capitalise on industry best practice and new research findings by customising them to local environments and farming systems, MLA said. PGS activities are long-term and small group based, running over a number of sessions and from six to 18 months depending on the topic, the group and the requirements.

The Monaro workshop will also include information on other practical, cross-industry learning opportunities including Zoetis ReproActive Workshops; PGS Fertile Profitable Production for Your Beef Herd; PGS Drought Feeding Economically; and PGS Lamb Lean Meat Yield and Eating Quality.

The Monaro workshop is from 9.30am to 3pm at Nimmitabel Country Club and is free to attend. Morning tea and lunch are included.
