Man injured in live export vessel fire at Fremantle

Terry Sim, October 9, 2014

A fire aboard the live export carrier Ocean Drover at Fremantle Port was yesterday contained to an accommodation area.

A statement from the ship’s owner Wellard said a man injured in the fire was receiving medical treatment. All other crew members have been accounted for and safely evacuated.

Wellard said the fire occurred in the ship’s accommodation area. The vessel was in port to load cattle, but there were no livestock on board at the time.

“One person has been injured and is receiving medical treatment,” Wellard said.

The export company is working with emergency services in relation to the incident.

A statement from the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the fire is not a direct threat to the community, however people are asked to stay away from the area.

ABC Radio reported that firefighters were delayed in fighting the fire while they waited on a specific type of foam. The fire was reported at about 8am today.
