Dubbo shearer to try for third shearing record in October

Terry Sim September 16, 2024

Dubbo shearer Steven Mudford.

DUBBO shearing contractor Steven Mudford will catch and drag about 30 tonnes of wriggling Merino wethers when he attempts to set a new solo nine-hour shearing record on 12 October near Dubbo this year.

The current solo nine-hour Merino wether record of 418 was set by Grant Smith at Ryton Station in New Zealand in 1999.

The 49 year-old shearer already holds the eight-hour Merino wether shearing record and is one of three shearers that set a world three-stand Merino ewe record of 1294 in 2014.

His uncle Don Mudford said if Steven clinches this latest record he will be the only person to hold three world shearing records simultaneously.

“And he’s a grandfather,” Mr Mudford said.

Mr Mudford said because of his age Steven has been advised to go steady on a delayed training program.

The attempt will take place at ‘Parkdale Merino Stud’ Collie Road, Dubbo, NSW, Australia. Referees will be: Neil Fagan N.Z. Convener, David Brooker, Dave Grant, Ralph Blue, Australia.

Go Muddy. All the best for your record attempt. There will also be a charity auction during Muddy’s lunch break for Will Coy who is battling with cancer. Donated items for the auction would be gratefully accepted. Send details to [email protected]
