Composite and crossbred ewes sell well on AuctionsPlus

COMPOSITE and crossbred ewes continued to sell well in AuctionsPlus sales last week, but Merinos met weaker competition.

The online sheep and lamb offering rose to total 122,888 head, an increase of 24,503.

Numbers were boosted by the 5803 head in the Lambpro Maternal Primeline Ewe Sale and the interfacing of 12,305 head at the Jamestown store sheep market.

The Riverina region of New South Wales continued to dominate online buying; purchasing 13,330 head last week.

Lambpro ewe hoggets to $303

The Lambpro Maternal Primeline Ewe Sale was held online last week with a 100 percent clearance. Ewe lambs sold from $136 to $246, averaging $206. Ewe hoggets averaged $302, making $300 to $303 and older ewe offering sold from $240 to $283, averaging $267.

Merino ewe prices drop

A smaller offering of Merino ewe lambs met strong demand to record a total clearance, but at lower prices. They sold from $85 to $180 to average $129, down $67 on last week. A line of Willandra blood ewe lambs weighing 35kgs at Hillston, NSW, sold for the top price. Merino ewe hoggets averaged $216, up $8, and sold from $105 up to $288. A line of 15-16 month-old unjoined Pastora blood ewes at The Rock, NSW, weighing 60kgs sold for $260 to a Victorian buyer.

Young Merino ewes 2-4 years-old sold from $126 to $247, averaging $191, down $6. A line of rising four year-old unjoined Willandra blood ewes weighing 72kg at Nerrin Nerrin in Victoria sold for $229. At Morven in Queensland a line of four year-old unjoined Well Gully blood ewes weighing 48kgs made $148.

Proven Merino breeders (4+ years) from $86 to $221, averaging $157, $13 down on last week. At  Wanganella in NSW a line of five year-old Spring Plains blood ewes weighing 66kgs sold for $167. At Jamestown in South Australia unjoined rising 6 year-old Merino ewes weighing 74kg made $188 in the Jamestown store sale. They were sold to a Victorian buyer.

Merino wether lambs sell to $157

Merino wether lambs sold from $70 to $157, and averaged $116, up $6. A line of April/May 2019 drop Koonwarra blood wether lambs weighing 43kgs at Grenfell, NSW, sold for $138. At Violet Town in Victoria, a line of June/July 2019 drop Toland blood store wether lambs weighing 32kgs made $105.

Merino wethers sold from $100 to $144 and averaged $121, up $17. At Tharwa in the Australian Capital Territory, a line of two year-old Tallawong and Bogo blood trade wethers weighing 50kgs sold for $128 to a Victorian buyer.

First cross ewe lambs make $250

First cross ewe lambs sold from $90 to $250 and averaged $155, up $4. The top price was paid for a line of May/June 2019 drop ewe lambs weighing 47kgs at Frances, South Australia. First cross ewe hoggets sold from $201 to $333 to average $274, down $26. At Edenhope in Victoria, the top price was paid for three lines of 17-18 month ewe hoggets weighing 69kgs. At Oatlands in Tasmiania, a line of 13 month-old ewe hoggets weighing 58kgs sold for $280.

Other highlights included a line of 5.5-7.5 year-old Dohne ewes weighing 67kgs with 2-10 week old White Suffolk cross lambs at Hillston, NSW, that sold for $223 to a Victorian buyer. At Condobolin, NSW, a line of 14-16 month-old Australian White ewes weighing 61kgs and scanned in-lamb to Australian White rams made $205.

Store lamb prices slip online

There were 39,358 store lambs offered online last week, up 11,677 head, and 85pc were sold. Prices dropped 12c/kg liveweight to average 375c/kg, within a range of 277-541c/kg. Highlights included:

–      First cross mixed sex, August/September 2019 drop, 21kg, $105.50 or 541c/kg, Manilla NSW

–      Poll Dorset cross, June/July 2019 drop, 40kg, $157.50 or 404c/kg, Crookwell, NSW

–      Highlander and White Suffolk wethers, June/July 2019 drop, 40kg, $140.50 or 350c/kg, Kingscote, SA

–      White Suffolk cross wethers, July/August 2019 drop, 36kg, $125 or 357c/kg, Seymour, Victoria

–      Poll Dorset cross, June/July 2019 drop, 46kg, $160 or 347c/kg, Glenburn, Victoria
