AuctionsPlus Wool demand steady during Talman breakdown

Sheep Central March 4, 2020

ONLINE buyer activity on AuctionsPlus Wool was steady last week as physical auctions sales were cancelled due to the cyber attack on major software provider Talman.

AuctionsPlus Wool project manager Tom Rookyard said 365 bales were traded one line last week.

Mr Rookyard said almost 70,000 bales will be offered in auctions in Melbourne, Fremantle and Sydney this week, which would test the market.

“This (software) disruption saw industry at a standstill leaving brokers, exporters, buyers and growers in limbo.

“This highlights the reliance and consequently vulnerability almost every business nowadays faces due to our reliance on computers; however, it has been slammed by many in the industry.”

The top greasy price paid for a lot sold online last week was 1640c/kg, or 2178c/kg clean for a three-bale line of 16.4 micron SUPAAA Merino fleece wool. The line had a yield of 75.3 percent, with an average staple length of 93mm, a tensile strength of 32 Newtons/kilotex, and 0.2pc vegetable matter content. The lot was offered by Elders Melbourne and branded EJM/S.

Merino pieces sold up to 1039c/kg greasy or 1928c/kg clean for a three-bale 16.1 micron non-mulesed line that yielded 53.pc, with a staple length of 67mm, tensile strength of 26N/kt and with 5pc vm. The lot was offered by Primaries of WA, branded Yarrabin.

Mr Rookyard said a 14.8 micron fleece line sold for 1460c/kg greasy, or 2131c/kg clean, and a non-mulesed 15.8 micron line made 1530c/kg greasy or 2090c/kg clean. A 17.9 micron line sold for 1054c/kg greasy, or 1811c/kg clean, and an undeclared 18.1 micron line made 1350c/kg greasy or 1875c/kg clean. An undeclared 19.5 micron line sold for 1310c/kg greasy, or 1810c/kg clean, and a 20.5 micron fleece line sold for 1310c/kg greasy or 1827c/kg clean.
