AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb clearance slumps as store buyers back off

AUCTIONSPLUS clearance of sheep and lambs in online sales slumped almost 20 percent last week as buyer confidence waned.

AuctionsPlus technical operations officer Matt Cotton said last week’s clearance rate of 55 percent – down from 74pc the week before — indicated a continued low buyer confidence for the coming season.

Sheep and lamb numbers dropped this week to total 81,114 head online; however, interest remained strong with 582 unique bidders logging in for sales. Agents listed 30,933 new season lambs, down 14,000 head from last week.

Merino ewe hoggets make $227

Merino ewe lambs and hoggets sold from $82.50 up to $227 last week. The top price was paid for 254 15-17 month-old early August-shorn Hannaton Poll Merino blood ewes at Kaniva in Victoria. The ewes weighed 58.3kg and were mostly score 4 in condition. They sold to local buyer.

AuctionsPlus offered about 10,000 young and grown Merino ewes which averaged $157. They sold to $210 for 358 unjoined 3.5 year-old Merino ewes at West Wyalong, New South Wales. These early September-shorn ewes weighed 78.7kg and were mostly score 4 in condition.

The number of Merino and Poll Merino wethers and wether lambs dropped sharply to about 18,000, from 31,000 the week before. Merino wether lambs averaged $80, selling from $40 to $108.50. The top price was paid for 340 6-7 month-old unshorn wether lambs at Tintinara in South Australia. These lambs weighed 36 kg were mostly score 1 in condition and sold to a buyer at Mount Drummond, SA.

First cross ewe lambs sell to $255

First cross ewe lambs sold from $110 to $255 to average $181 on AuctionsPlus last week. The top price was paid for 220 11-12 month-old mid-August shorn lambs at Coonamble in New South Wales. The lambs weighed 58.6kgs and were score 3. They were bought by a Victorian buyer at Bannock.

First cross ewes with lambs made to $305, for 151 15-18 month-old early November-shorn ewes with 163 2-6 week-old White Suffolk cross lambs at Noradjuha in Victoria. They sold to a Horsham buyer. Other sale highlights included 98 15-17 month-old early September-shorn Dohne cross ewes at Milang, SA, making $186. The ewes weighed 56.9kg, were score 3 in condition and sold to a Victorian buyer at Yanac.
